The brief

“The kitchen was in the darkest room in the house and the laundry was a trough in the bathroom. We were opening up the back anyway, so we wanted it all sorted at once.”

What we found

Every renovation has surprises. Publishing ours is the point — this is what a variation actually looks like, and how it got handled.

• The existing waste from the old kitchen ran the wrong way across the subfloor at almost no fall — it had been draining by luck rather than design.
• There was no separate laundry waste at all; the trough had been teed into the bathroom line, which would not pass today.
• The stump heights at the rear allowed a proper fall for the new run, so the relocation was straightforward once the layout was set.
